"We view eye health education as an important part of our mission," said Dave Cole, general manager of the Americas, Transitions Optical. "As consumers better understand the importance of taking care of their eyes, they're more likely to make regular appointments. EyeSite is free and convenient, and has real potential to stimulate interest in vision care and increase the number of patients practitioners see."

"Self-service is growing in popularity and partnering with SoloHealth, an innovator in the self-service market, gives us one more tool to reach out to patients and consumers," according to Tom Daniells, VP of Marketing at Optos. "Because EyeSite vision screenings do not replace a full eye exam, we feel it will drive traffic to eye care practitioners, resulting in opportunities for increased sales of products and medical services including our retinal imaging technology."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EyeSite kiosk? What does it do?
EyeSite is a self-service eye health awareness and new patient-generating kiosk that provides eye health information and makes recommendations to schedule a “complete eye examination” with a local eyecare professional (ECP), based on the users’ results and history. In today’s era of consumer-driven healthcare decisions, this public service puts consumers in the driver’s seat to take the first step towards pursuing visual health.

How does the EyeSite kiosk work?
Prospective patients answer a series of logically and sequentially presented questions on a touch screen and are presented a series of increasing and decreasing sized letters that, based on their answers, can be used to determine near and distance visual acuity. The vision test takes less than three minutes. Based on the specific results as well as patient-provided information from their last eye exam, the kiosk will recommend a follow up exam with an ECP listed in the system.

The kiosk also provides relevant eye health messages based on a prospective patient’s responses to various questions. For example, someone who is African-American and older than 40 years old might received the message, “Did you realize that you are five to seven times more likely to have glaucoma?” These messages and eye exam recommendations will be summarized in a Vision Test Report that patients take home with them.

Can I see an example of a Vision Test Report?
Yes. An example of the Vision Test Report can be found on www.solo-health.com/report

Does the EyeSite kiosk provide a prescription? Does it contain an auto refractor?
No. EyeSite only provides a simple, yet accurate, visual acuity screen, followed by a recommendation to follow up with an eyecare provider, and customized educational content. It is NOT a diagnostic device.

What if the person using the kiosk has good vision already? What message do they receive?
The EyeSite kiosk recommends that users get a regular eye exam with an eye care professional regardless of their visual acuity. In addition, the EyeSite kiosk provides relevant eye health messages based on a prospective patient’s responses to various questions and encourages them to see their eye care professional. For example, someone who is African-American and older than 40 years old might receive the message, “Did you realize that you are five to seven times more likely to have glaucoma?”

Won’t a person using the EyeSite kiosk think it is a replacement to a regular eye exam?
SoloHealth has built in very strong messaging and communication into the EyeSite kiosks experience which clearly states that this does not replace a regular eye exam.

Where will the kiosks be located?
SoloHealth will place the EyeSite kiosks in high traffic retail environments, making it quick and easy for prospective patients to access. These may include grocery stores, drug stores, malls and other high traffic environments (airports, large employers, health clubs, etc.).

Where can I find a listing of participating retailers?
Soon ECPs and prospective patients can visit www.solo-health.com/locations to search for a listing of participating retailers near them.

How does SoloHealth make money?
SoloHealth makes its money from practices who pay to list their services and from manufacturers who advertise their products. Similar, but infinitely more effective than the Yellow Pages, a practice can have exclusivity – think full-page ad – or can be listed as one of many.

What is the SoloHealth business model?
SoloHealth has two business models:

1. Manufacturer Sponsorship - Manufacturers lease a number of units for one year and have exclusive control over the advertising content and ECP referral listings. Kiosks are placed in grocery, drug stores, malls and large employers. Optical manufacturers provide a list of accounts meeting their criteria which are then promoted on the kiosk.

Example: Transitions, Optos, and other optical manufacturers have joined forces to deploy 30 EyeSite kiosks in St. Louis. Locations will likely include drug stores, grocery stores, malls and other high traffic locations. Practices listed in the kiosks will be those which met the criteria of the sponsors.

2. Eyecare Practitioner Sponsorship - ECPs lease a number of units for one year and have exclusive control over the advertising content and ECP referral listing. Kiosks are typically placed in grocery, drug stores, large employers and mall locations. ECPs may choose to work with their vendor partners and use co-op money to support the EyeSite fees.

Example: Standard Optical in Salt Lake City, UT is using a number of EyeSite kiosks in local supermarkets to promote all 17 of their locations.
